Let’s explore the differences between SUV sizes:

Small SUVs 

These are best for drivers looking for something larger than a small sedan but smaller than a big SUV. Small SUVs offer flexible cargo space and a higher driving position than most cars, which appeals to many drivers. Fuel economy varies, but they typically get around 25 to 28 MPG overall. They also come with a smaller price tag, usually starting in the high $20,000s and topping out around $35,000. If you’re looking for a small SUV, we recommend models like the Jeep Compass, the Jeep Cherokee, and the Dodge Hornet. 

Midsize SUVs 

For most drivers, the midsized SUV is the perfect combination of power, interior space, cargo room, and safety. Midsized models come in two- and three-row options with room for five to eight people. Seating

Almost all SUVs carry at least five people, and some mid- and full-sized models include a third-row that increases the capacity to seven or eight. With the third row upright, you’ll lose some cargo space unless you opt for the extended version of a large SUV. 

Cargo 

Cargo space is one of the most appealing features of an SUV. Even with three rows of seats, you’ll enjoy versatile seating configurations to accommodate your cargo. To get the most out of your space, look for seats that fold down flat. For maximum convenience, ask to see models with power-operated, hands-free liftgates, which make it easier to access the cargo area. 

Safety and Driver Assistance Features 

Safety ratings for every SUV can be found on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) website. We recommend looking for modern safety features like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and blind spot warning. These are just a few of the available features, so be sure to ask about more advanced safety features!  

2WD, AWD, and 4WD 

Most SUVs offer all these drive options. AWD and 4WD provide power to all wheels and are ideal for off-roading or areas that get snow. For everyday driving in a mild climate, 2WD is typically sufficient.
