How To Prepare Your Car For Your Roadtrip

Road trips are a great way to explore new destinations, spend quality time with loved ones, and create memories. To make sure your road trip is as smooth as possible, we recommend making sure your car is ready for the journey. With a pre-road trip inspection and maintenance, you can avoid unexpected breakdowns and ensure your vehicle is as safe. In this blog, we’ll give you a few tips to prepare your car for a road trip, focusing on essential maintenance checks and how to pack smartly. Essential Maintenance Checks Let’s get started with a quick inspection and routine maintenance. Here are the most important things to take a look at before you hit the road: Tires and Brakes: Make sure that your tires are properly inflated, have adequate tread, and your brakes are functioning well. Don’t forget to check your spare tire, too! In the event that you get a flat tire, you don’t want to be caught without a spare. Fluids: Check your oil, coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid, and top off any that are low. Battery: To avoid getting stranded, test your car’s battery. While you’re under the hood, clean any corrosion from the terminals and make sure it holds a full charge. Lights and Signals: Verify that all your lights, including headlights, brake lights, and turn signals, are working correctly to ensure visibility for you and other drivers. Packing and Emergency Preparation In addition to your luggage, there are a few extras you should pack so you’re prepared for the unexpected: Emergency Kit: It’s a good idea to keep essentials such as a first-aid kit, jumper cables, a tire repair kit, a flashlight, and roadside flares in your car. If you’re going to be traveling through a snowy area, thermal blankets are another good addition, along with extra bottled water and non-perishable snacks. Pack Wisely: Avoid overloading your car to prevent unnecessary strain on your vehicle. Packing heavier items low and toward the center will help you maintain proper balance. Don’t forget to secure your luggage and make sure nothing blocks the view from your rearview mirror. The Importance of Tire Maintenance

Your tires keep your vehicle connected to the road and are one of the most important factors in safe driving. That makes tire maintenance a vital part of keeping your Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, or Jeep in tip-top shape. Not sure where to start? Here are some tips to help you keep your tires in the best condition possible. Why Tire Maintenance Is Important Ignoring tire maintenance can lead to decreased fuel efficiency and larger vehicle safety issues like less control. Low tread, flat tires, and blowouts can even lead to accidents. While flat tires and blowouts aren’t always preventable with proper maintenance, low tread is completely preventable. Replacing tires when worn, rotating tires to distribute wear, and keeping your tires properly filled all help keep your vehicle safe and save you money on gas and future repairs. Tire Maintenance Basics With proper maintenance, you should get around 50,000 miles from your tires. Here are three ways to ensure you get the most life out of them. Visual inspection One of the easiest ways to maintain your tires is to perform a visual inspection periodically. Look for cracks in the rubber, which can develop due to age and UV exposure. It’s especially important to look for cracks if your tires are over 5-6 years old, as this is when they typically start cracking. You’ll also want to do a tread inspection. The tread gives your car traction; when it gets too low, you’ll have less grip and control on the road. Tire tread naturally wears down with use, so every tire will lose tread over time. New tires come with at least 10/32 inches of tread, almost ⅓ of an inch. Tires also come with a tread wear indicator, a line that becomes more visible as the tread wears down. When the tread is worn to the point that it is even with the indicator, it’s time to replace your tires. If you’re not sure how to locate the indicator, you can use a penny. Simply place a penny into the treat with Lincoln’s head upside down. If you can see the top of his head, you need new tires. 2. Balancing and Rotation Balancing your tires prevents uneven tread wear and vibrations when driving. A special tire balancing machine measures the tires’ natural balance so that our technicians can balance out any vibrations by adding or removing wheel weight. Since each tire of your vehicle gets worn slightly differently, tire rotation balances the wear. This helps prevent excessive wear in one spot or on one tire. We recommend having your tires rotated each time you come in for an oil change. 3. Tire Pressure Monitoring Overinflation and underinflation can both lead to premature wear on your tires. If your tires are overfilled, you’re much more likely to have a blowout. Underinflated tires cause more drag and lead to poor fuel efficiency. Modern vehicles have tire pressure monitoring systems that will alert you when a tire is over or underinflated, making it easy to ensure you always have the right amount of air. Visit the Santee CDJR Service Center for Your Tire Needs At Santee CDJR, our Service Center technicians have the tools and expertise to perform all types of tire maintenance. 5 Car Maintenance Tips Every Teen Driver Should Know

At Santee Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM, we treat our customers like family. We want you and your entire family to be safe on the road. We know that regular car maintenance is part of vehicle safety, and we believe that teaching young drivers how to take care of their car is vital. Whether you are a new or experienced driver or you’re teaching your teenager how to drive, here are 5 things everyone should know. 5 Tips to Teach Your Young Driver It’s best to start with the basics! No need to get into technical details since that’s what our Service Center is here for. Here are five basic vehicle maintenance tips your young driver should know: How to Check The Tires. While most modern vehicles will automatically notify you when the tire pressure is low, it’s important to teach your teen driver what the pressure should be and how to fill them when it is needed. This will ensure they get the best gas mileage and that their tires last as long as possible. In addition, teach them to check their tire’s tread for wear and tear. An easy way to check the wear is by putting a penny into the thread groove. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to think about new tires. And, of course, they should know how to change a flat tire. How to Check Fluids. New drivers should know how to check a vehicle’s oil, coolant, and wiper fluid. Knowing how to check these fluids is simple and will help keep their car running smoothly. In the case of wiper fluid, they can even top it off themselves! How to Identify Worn Brakes. It’s no secret that brakes are a vital part of any vehicle. That’s why it’s important to teach your teen the signs of worn brakes. New sounds–like grinding or screeching–and a longer stop time are telltale signs that your brakes are worn. Let them know that if they notice either of these signs, it’s time to have their brakes inspected. How to Take Care of a Battery. A mechanic can tell you how much life your battery has left, but new drivers should understand how to conserve battery power. Things like leaving your lights on or sitting with just the engine turned on for an extended period will drain your battery life quickly. Teaching your teen how to jump-start a car and purchasing jumper cables to keep in their vehicle will empower them to take care of the problem if they ever encounter a dead battery. How to Spot Warning Signs. Every driver, especially a new one, should be able to identify warning signs that something may be wrong with their vehicle. Things like a shaking steering wheel, overheating, strange noises, and fluid leaks are signals that your vehicle needs immediate attention. It’s also a good idea to teach them the meaning of different warning lights on the dashboard so they can better understand when one pops up. Understanding Your Car’s Dashboard Warning Lights

Car maintenance is important, but it can be confusing. And when a new warning light shows up on your dashboard, it can be even more puzzling. Knowing what these warning lights mean can help ease your anxiety and provide some insight into what’s going on under the hood. Warning lights aren’t always something to panic about, but they should be taken seriously. Here are some of the most common warning lights, what they mean, and what you should do if you see them. Most Common Dashboard Warning Lights Check Engine Light Shape: Silhouette of an engine Typical Color: Orange, yellow, or amber This is probably the most dreaded warning light, but it doesn’t always mean something catastrophic. It could signify something as minor as a faulty spark plug, ill-fitting gas cap, or a damaged sensor. But of course, it could be a sign of a more serious problem, like an issue with your catalytic converter or full engine failure. If this light is illuminated but everything seems okay with your car, don't panic, but visit a mechanic as soon as possible. On the other hand, if the light turns on and the vehicle is making strange noises or not operating as it should, pull over as soon as it’s safe and get a tow to your local service center. At Santee CDJR, we’re happy to run a diagnostic test and find the cause of the problem. Battery Light Shape: Silhouette of a battery Typical Color: Red This warning light is straightforward: there’s an issue with your battery. In addition to the light, you may notice that your vehicle has trouble starting. Even if your car starts up normally, don’t ignore this light. It could be as simple as needing a new battery, but it can also signify an issue with your wiring or alternator. Coolant Temperature Shape: A thermometer in water Typical Color: Yellow or orange When this light comes on, your vehicle is running too hot. There are a lot of possible causes for this issue, including a broken water pump, low coolant levels, a leaking or broken coolant hose, or radiator damage. All of these are serious issues that could cause major engine damage and expensive repairs. Do not ignore this light! Transmission Temperature Shape: A gear with a thermometer in the middle Typical Color: Yellow, orange, or red This is another warning light you should never ignore. It signals a critical problem with your gearbox, which could be caused by extremely heavy towing, low transmission fluid, or excessive wear on your transmission. Oil Pressure Warning Shape: An oil can with a drip Typical Color: Yellow, orange, or red This light could signify something as simple as needing an oil change or your engine oil needing to be topped off. More serious issues could be a leak in the engine or worn parts like a broken oil pump. If this light comes on, you can check your oil levels yourself at home. If the oil is low, topping it off may solve the problem and the light will go off on its own. If you’re not comfortable investigating on your own or that doesn’t solve the problem, take it to a mechanic as soon as possible. Tire Pressure Monitoring System Shape: An exclamation mark in a circle with the top open Typical Color: Yellow, orange, or red This is another relatively straightforward warning light: it indicates that one or more of your tires are low. In newer vehicles, this light may even tell you which tire(s) need attention and how much air they need. A quick stop at a gas station with an air pump will solve the problem, and the light should go off once the tires are filled to the right levels. If the issue persists, you may have a leak in your tire, which a mechanic can identify and patch or replace the tire altogether. Let Santee Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM Take Care of Your Service Needs! Best barbecue spots in Manning, SC

3 of the Best Barbecue Restaurants Near Manning

Although there is absolutely nothing wrong with steaming-hot curry, a juicy piece of steak, or a thin-crust pizza topped with your favorites, there are days when all one craves is authentic wood-smoked barbecue accompanied by Southern-style comfort food. On days like these, you'll want to check out one of these top-quality barbecue joints in Manning. McCabe's Bar-B-Que When the McCabe brothers established McCabe's Bar-B-Que about 30 years ago, they decided to leave the cooking in the capable hands of their mother, Jessie McCabe. Today, 90-year-old Mrs. McCabe is still cooking all the delicious food served at McCabe's Bar-B-Que. That's right, the barbecue at this establishment is prepared the McCabe-family way! You won't, for instance, get a choice of sauces with the smoky pulled pork. You'll be served the one sauce that Jessie has prepared for the dish — and it's so delicious that the lack of choice won't even cross your mind. Apart from the succulent barbecue, the buffet at McCabe's also boasts traditional Southern favorites like turnip greens, coleslaw, hush puppies, green beans, sweet potatoes prepared with sugar, cinnamon, and butter, and the piece de resistance — Jessie's famous fried chicken. This small venue is cozy and welcoming, and seeing that just about everyone who works at the establishment is a McCabe, you're assured of friendly and attentive service. McCabe's is open Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. D & H Bar-B-Que Locals say that at D & H Bar-B-Que, a locally-owned barbecue joint that opened its doors in 1947, you'll find the best barbecue and fried chicken in town. In fact, the South Carolina Barbeque Association thinks so too, as D & H Bar-B-Que has made it onto their list of Top 100 BBQ Houses in the state. The buffet at D & H is loaded to the brim with delicious Southern comfort food, including BBQ pork, mac 'n' cheese, potato salad, green beans, and stewed tomatoes. On Tuesdays and Saturdays starting at 5 p.m., seafood dishes, like large shrimp and fried clams, are also added to the buffet selection. D & H's venue is an old ex-fast food drive-in joint, so it's a bit on the plain side. However, the friendly service, delicious food, and affordable prices more than make up for the lack of aesthetics. D & H's is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. JK's House of Ribs JK's House of Ribs boasts a small and cozy venue where you can sit down for your barbecue fix. On the menu are old-time favorites, such as pulled pork, brisket, and ribs, which you can enjoy with sides like green beans, onion rings, coleslaw, mac 'n' cheese, baked beans, and cheese sticks. Of course, if you're craving something beyond barbeque, you can instead opt for a juicy burger, hot dog, or some Southern-style chicken. JK's is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. These barbecue joints don't only offer traditional barbecue prepared with patience and care, but also cozy venues and friendly service, which all together make for the ultimate Southern experience.   Image via Pixabay.com | CC 0 | Cropped from original

Swan Lake Iris Gardens The spectacular iris gardens in Sumter began as a project by a local businessman to develop swampland, landscape his grounds, and create a private fishing retreat. When his Japanese iris failed to flower, he had the bulbs dug up and dumped in the swamp where they burst into bloom the following spring. Today, Swan Lake forms the backdrop for the stunning display of iris which bloom from late May into June. The garden features many other exotic flowers including Japanese magnolias, azaleas, camellias, and day lilies. On the lake, with its abundant wildlife and colorful islands, you can see all eight swan species. Memorial Day weekend sees the annual Iris Festival featuring concerts, classic car and antique shows, arts and crafts, and many activities for the whole family. 3. Richburg Farms Located on Paxville Highway in Manning, Richburg Farms offers you the chance to experience rural farm life. From April through July you can head to this traditional farm and, depending on the current crop, pick your own strawberries, tomatoes, and more.
